Hi,

When I open the Header/Footer in a Word 2003 document, I
get the normal broken-line border area for both the
header and the footer. The header appears of a normal
size, but the footer is quite tiny. If I go to Page
Setup, I can add about 0.5 inches to the footer, and this
works quite well.

Is there a way to make this size the default? Hitting the
Default button does not do this, and when I go to the
Normal style sheet, I didn't find anyway to add this
feature to that style.

The default position for the footer is 0.5" from the bottom of the page. If
you add additional lines of text, the footer will be pushed up from that
point toward (or into) the document body. If you increase the footer margin,
you should probably also increase the bottom margin to leave a reasonable
space between the document body and the footer and to reduce the change of
overlap.

If you change the footer margin and press the Default... button, the change
you made should be reflected in new documents based on the current template
(assumed to be Normal.dot). If you are prompted to save Normal.dot when you
quit Word, you will need to say yes.

Hi, Suzanne,

Thanks for the quick reply.

I think something is not right with my settings. When I
open the footer, it opens about 1/10 of an inch from the
bottom (margins are set to 1" all around, not the more
normal and reasonable 0.5"). I am working in the Print
View. It is only when I tell the program to place the
footer 0.5" from the bottom edge, that it adds the space.
When I hit the Default button, nothing happens, and when
I open a new document, the same 0.1" footer placing
repeats itself.

Is there anything else I can do besides manually
adjusting the footer each time?

Hi,

Thanks for your continuing help. When I open a blank
page, everything appears to be fine. I am dealing with a
DOC created by an application that converts data from a
database into a Word format. It is possible that the
problem lies in how this application (Perseus
SurveySolution) creates this document and not within Word
2003 itself.
