Hi,

My document contains footnotes. Till recently the short
line, that is automatically put on every page above the
footnote - if there are -, was put on every page just
above the first footnote on that particular page.

For one or another reason, now this line is to be found on
every page containing footnotes at an invariable height -
leaving a lot of space white on most pages.

How can I make the height of this line variable again,
depending on the size of the footnotes?

Try the following:

1. Make sure that footnote placement is set to "Bottom of page":
Choose Insert > Reference > Footnote (Insert>Footnote in Word
97/2000); Word displays the Footnote and Endnote dialog box. Click
Options. Click the All Footnotes tab. Make sure that "Place at" is set
to "Bottom of page", and click OK. Click Close to close the Footnote
and Endnote dialog box.

2. Make sure that no paragraph spacing or line spacing has been
applied to the footnote separator: Switch to Normal View (on the View
menu, click Normal). Choose View > Footnotes. Word displays the
Footnote pane at the bottom of your document. In the Footnotes box,
select Footnote separator. Choose Format>Paragraph. Click the Indents
and Spacing tab. Make sure "Space Before" and "Space After" are both
set to 0 (zero). Also, make sure that "Line Spacing" is set to
"Single". Click OK.
