I am running Office 2000 Word on a new Dell with XP Home.
I want to add a header and page number to a document.  At
first it worked but now, a week later, when I open a new
document and click on view/header-footer it does not
appear.  Previously saved documents still work when I
click on view/header-footer.
I tried "detect and repair" and even uninstalled and
reinstalled Office to no avail.  Please help.

Are there univerasl settings on XP home that may have been
changed to make these features inoperable

Hi Carol,

Search all your drives for the file Normal.dot (note: you
may need to activate searching "hidden folder and files").
Now rename that to Normal.OLD, then start up Word and see if
you can now access headers and footers?

An even quicker test is to start Word by typing winword /a in the Start |
Run box, then pressing Enter (note that there is a space before the forward
slash). If this solves the problem, then you know that the cause is
Normal.dot (probably) or the Registry or an add-in and can take steps
accordingly.
