We have a document where it appears the header is covering
our body text. The top part of the first line of text on
each page is missing. We've gone to page setup and checked
the settings for the margins and the distance between the
headers and footers. Nothing seems to work. Any ideas?

I'm guessing you have a graphic in the header?  If so, open the header,
right-click on the graphic, and left-click on Format Picture | Layout |
Behind Text | OK, and close the header.

There's no graphic in the header. However, it does seem to
be acting like there's a graphic or text frame there, but
we can't find one (we received this file from someone
else...so it's not something we set up ourselves).

Hmmm... does it print the same way, or does it just display that way?

Display the entire page, then select the header. Select the arrow from the
Drawing toolbar. Click and drag a rectangle around the entire page. Any
invisible graphics will show up, shown by their sizing handles. Documents
imported from WordPerfect sometimes end up with phantom graphics like empty
textboxes or rectangles drawn in white.
