You need to (a) insert a section break between Essay #1 and Essay #2, (b)
tell Word to place the endnotes at the end of each section, and (c) tell
Word to restart numbering for each section. The only problem will come if
you have to have more than one section break in a given essay (to change the
number of columns, page orientation, etc.).

Only if I knew and did more than one section break prior
to saving! My first essay with endnotes is done, now I
can't insert the 2nd section break because it is grey in
the toolbar and would allow the keys.
Much obliged!

You have to insert the section break at the end of the essay text; don't try
to insert it after the endnotes (which aren't really "there"). You may find
this easier to do in Normal view, in which the endnotes are not displayed.

Unfortunately, my first saved version ended with the
endnotes and I can note get the "Insert" menu to show
the "Break" function after various attempts to do so.
I also tried going into the normal view of the article and
entered a couple enters at the end of the article before I
put in the section breaks. Yet after I opened the file in
my print view, the inserted breaks are all in between the
endnote subtitle and the endnotes body itself.
Can I email you my word file and have you figure out what
was wrong for me?
Thanks,
Kath

Sure, send it to my email. But what you might try to do first is convert the
endnotes to footnotes, insert your break, then convert back.
