I start off with a blank document with default settings. I create a
document. When I try to print it, Word comes back with a message: "the
margins of section 1 are set outside the printable area of the page". If I
go into Page Setup to fix the margins Word insists on setting the bottom
margin to 2.67". How can I fix this?

This message and measurement are typical indications of a conflict between
Word and the HP driver for certain LaserJets. Some users report that
restarting Word will clear the problem. Using a Windows driver instead of
the HP one will as well, but you may lose some HP features. Many users have
reported that the drivers from
http://www.hp.com/pond/ljbeta/index.html solve the problem.

Check the format of your column. Even though it's set to one column, if the
margins for the column are not set correctly, it can cause this problem.
