When I try to drag or paste text next to a number in a list, it always
appears above it.  If I try and put it below the number and delete what is to
the right of the number to bring the text up, it simply deletes the number.

Version of Word? Are you displaying non-printing characters such as paragraph
marks in your document (Tools/Options/View)?
