Footers created in view>header and footer>insert auto text appear with gray
highlighting, which obscures the grayed footer text in the normal view.
Footer text is visible in print preview mode only.  How can the highlighting
be removed?

Sounds like it's a field. On the View tab of Tools | Options, set field
shading to "Never" or "When selected."
