layout for page number in footer

I would like to set page numbering in the footer for all new docs.  Can
someone tell me how to set this up.

I'll tell you how *not* to do it: *don't* add anything to the footer of
Normal.dot (see
http://word.mvps.org/FAQs/Customization/CustomizeNormalTemplate.htm).
Instead, create a document template (see
http://word.mvps.org/FAQs/Customization/CreateATemplatePart1.htm) and use it
for your documents.
