I want to set off a paragraph from the other text by indenting from both
sides.  How?

The best way is to apply the Block Text style (a built-in style with a 0.5"
indent on each side).

If you need the indents only occasionally, you can apply them directly:
either drag the markers on the ruler, or open the Format > Paragraph dialog
and type in the measurements.

The built-in Block Text style has 1" indents on each side, excessive for
most purposes, but it's still a good starting place. Apply the style, modify
the indents, and update the style.

Thanks. I lose track of what I've customized -- in some installations,
it's nearly everything. <g>

I leave Normal.dot untouched so I always have the default styles to refer
to.
