I apologize for not using the proper Microsoft terms, but is there any way to
select graphic items with the solid square "handles" and graphic items with
the clear round "handles" at the same time so as to group them? I'm using
Word 2002.

No, Mary Lee. But you can take the ones with the solid square handles,
double-click them, go to the layout tab and tell them to be In front of text
(or other text wrapping, as long as it's not In line with text), and you can
then group them with the others. When you're done, you can make the one
object inline with text again, if desired.
