How do I turn off auto format, so it quits indenting?

I often write reports using bullets or indenting to explain details.  As I go
down my list, it indents automatically, so my list is erratic.  I can select
all and make them the same.  But I'd rather turn formatting off, and type my
own way.  But I cannot find a button that will do this.
