When I open word documents they open in a minimized window.  I want them to
always open as maximized.  How do I do this?

You can't control what size window documents open in, but you can control
what size window Word opens in. If you use a shortcut (instead of a
document) to start Word, right-click on it, choose Properties, and choose
Run: Maximized.
