Thanks. After a break I realised it was operator error... The diaglog
where the levels are selected wasn't very clear to me.
I ended up regenerating normal.dot (probably a good idea anyway) redoing my
heading styles so they cascade and 6-9 are for the Appendices (1e.g. A.1
instead of 1.1), and then saving that as a new style to have the outline
numbering.
After a lot of cut'n'paste the document is there, though now I have to go
round fixing the cross-references... I keep telling myself it will all be
worth it in the end, and I will be finished pretty soon!
Thanks
Perhaps a bit late to mention this, but you might want to base your document
on a specific template other than Normal.dot. Once you've linked your
numbering format to styles, you don't really have to worry much about what
the default numbering in Format | Bullets and Numbering is. I go in
periodically and reset all the panes on all three tabs, but when you go to
that dialog from a numbered style, your numbering scheme will always be
displayed (and that's the one you *must* pick); and of course you must
always go in through level 1 if you're planning to change the numbering in
an outline-numbered list.

Hi Suzanne
Thanks, yes, I did save a new template once normal.dot was back to - normal!
(well my version of normal).
