Is it possible to separate the header from the footer of a page. I am trying
to auto number a four page letter within a 15 page document. I would like
the footer to contain the actual page number (ie: page 13, 14, 15 and 16) but
the header needs to show pg 1, 2, 3 and 4.

I saw this in MS knowledgebase just the other day:

I think this is exactly what you're looking.

Answer to your direct question about separating headers and footers is "No."
However, there are many options for page numbering that will report page
numbers the way you want. These involve calculation fields and IF fields.
Take a look at http://www.mvps.org/word/FAQs/Numbering/PageNumbering.htm.
For even more, see http://gregmaxey.mvps.org/Page_Numbering.htm.
