Table of Contents Woes

I understand that to set up a TOC that each component that you want to appear
has to be assigned a "header". I've done this and it works but in this
particular document I've had to use "numbering" in a way that there are many
numbers underneath ei: 15, 15.1, then 15.1.1, 15.1.1.1 etc. and all I want is
each of the 15, 15.1 and 16, 16.1 to show in the TOC, problem is it's
grabbing every one of them! I've gone in and assigned it to go to level 2 but
to no avail it keeps grabbing them all.
Very frustrating, as the document is all done and ready to go!

Did you update the table of contents after you reduced the number of
heading levels it should include? Just right-click and select the
Update Field option from the context menu. If prompted, make sure that
you choose to update the entire table of contents (not just page
numbers). If updating doesn't help, press Alt+F9 to display field
codes. What does it say?

From the TOC dialog box - click 'options' - uncheck 'Outline Levels'
Check 'Styles' Scroll down the list and put a '1' on the box relevant to the
style you have used for 15 & 16 and a 2 in the box relevant to the style you
have used for 15.1 and 16.1. Remove any numbers from any of the other style
boxes. Then insert the TOC.
What your problem may be is that you have the same style attached to the
different levels. You need outline numbering with proper use of the heading
styles for each level, so that you can properly apply the TOC to those
levels you require.
