In the four corners of my blank word document, there are four gray colored,
"L" shaped markers. They line up with the margin indicators and move left and
right when I move the margin markers. they appear to indicate where text will
appear on the page while I type.

These marks appeared one day when i accidentally hit some keys on my
keyboard. I cannot find the name for these marks or how to toggle them on and
off.

Can someone tell me the keyboard shortcut to turn them off and, as an aside,
what they are called?

thanks

See “Margin marks or crop marks appear on each corner of the page when you
open a document in Word 2002 or in Word 2003”

Thank you for the tip, however, this did not clear the marks. I am using Word
2002.
The Text boundaries box was unchecked. when i check it, it draws a square
perimeter between the earlier mentioned marks.
When i go to Microsoft Office Tools under programs and choose Microsoft
Office XP Language Settings, I get the error message:
This patch package could not be opened. Verify that the patch package exists
and that you can access it, or contact the application vendor to verfy that
this is a valid Windows Installer Package. Only choice is an OK button.

Well, then that is another problem you must deal with. See the KB article
"You receive the 'This patch package could not be opened' error message in
an Office program" at http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=295823
