After you insert a picture into a Word 2003 document, how do you later
recall the file name of the image you just inserted? I must be looking in
the wrong places because I can find no commands or options that tell me the
file name of an image in a document.

Happy Holidays!

Word does not keep any record of the filename unless you link to the file,
in which case you can see the path when you press Alt+F9 (but only if the
image is inline; if it's wrapped, you'll have to change the wrapping to In
Line With Text first). Once a picture is embedded and not linked, there is
no way to find out the original filename or location.

As Suzanne says, this information isn't stored, but because Word can create
HTML files, which allow the images to be extracted, you can get some of the
way by using the Script editor to view the file (ALT+SHIFT+F11)
If you search the body of the document in the editor for
o:title=
That will be the name of the picture without the file extension. It does not
give the location from which the image was inserted.

That's a great tip, Graham. Sometimes the filename alone is all you need.

Thanks Graham and Suzanne,

Yes, usually the filename is all that I need.

This is not exactly a convenient procedure, but it will work in a pinch.
Why does Microsoft make things like this so difficult? For example, when I
use FrameMaker or PageMaker or even other MS products such as FrontPage,
this isn't a problem at all.

OK, out of gripe mode now. Thanks. :-)

Keep in mind that Word is a *word* processing application. It's designed
primarily to handle text, not graphics.
