Re-linking Word documents to update a Table of Contents

I am working on a manual that spans several separate Word documents. Each
individual document is a chapter in the manual, and they are all linked to a
beginning document. After editting the the files and file names I found that
I am unable to edit the links on the document that contains the Table of
Contents. The links are listed on the page after the Table of Contents. Upon
clicking the links Word tells me that the document is locked. The only page
that is locked in this document is only the links.
How do I either delete or edit the current links on this document?

You need to describe to us in more detail how you created these links? This
sounds almost as if you'd done something with the Master Document feature?
