Different Number of coulmns in footnotes

Is there any way to create text one coulmn and footnotes two coulmns or vs.?
(and why not?)

Vice versa can be done; see
http://word.mvps.org/FAQs/Formatting/FtnoteSpanColumns.htm.

You can have multiple *tabbed* columns for the footnotes, using hidden
paragraph marks, but it doesn't gain you anything because Word still allows
just as much space for the footnotes as if they were stacked.
