I would like to set the page # insertion default to be (a) top-right of page
and (b) no number on the first page.  Is there a way to do that?  The current
default is at the bottom of the page.  Thanks

For changes to apply to multiple documents you might be able to modify
one of the document templates like "normal.dot".

a)Delete it from the footer and add to the header. Unless Word has
changed it from the '07 version, there should be an icon on the headers
and footers floating tool-bar (headers and footers on the view menu)
that looks like a pound sign (#) on a piece of paper for inserting the
page number. You can use the tab key a couple of times to reach the
right tab on the page.

b)Create a section a new section past the material that appears on the
first page and set different headers. Make sure the "Same as previous"
is NOT activated on the headers and footers tool-bar. Features might be
different on newer versions of Word.

1) ghartzell is referring to the default in Insert | Page Numbers; there is
no way to change this.

2) Adding page numbers to Normal.dot, regardless of how it is done, is
strongly discouraged (it will mess up labels, for one thing).

If you change the page number format (just clicking the 'formatting' button
is all - you don't have to make any change), you will get a 'close' button;
it doesn't save the position, but it does save the 'display on first page'
setting.

But this doesn't make it the default for new documents.

Sorry!  You have to do this from the normal.dot.

Well - I *thought* it worked from normal.dot - you have to insert the page
number, add the extra page (if you've unchecked 'show on first page'),
delete the page number frame, delete the extra page, *then* resave
normal.dot.  Yes, it's a pain, but it (sort of) works.
