It turns out with Acrobat 6 there are preferences in a dropdown box in Word
itself, not in Acrobat or Distiller, and a cute little button you push-
then it all happens.
Had I not already sent this query to the group, I would again think myself
clever for accidentally working it out- but under the circumstances- please
accept my apologies with a loud Homer Simpsonlike DOH!

Thanks for posting this. I have Acrobat 6 (first version I've had), and I
find it quite baffling and very poorly documented. I haven't yet had to
create a PDF with a TOC, but I've been wondering how one did this.
