someone has been sent a document that has text form fields
in.   He would like to be able to print this all out.  If
I change to Normal view and print, it works.  When he does
it, as soon as he presses print all the grey fields
disappear.  Any ideas what could be different?  I
connected to his same printer and it was fine.

He has "Update fields" checked on the Print tab of Tools | Options and you
don't. But the fields should not be cleared unless you have unprotected and
reprotected the document.
