we are running Win2k with office 2003. We tried to add a
new font through control panel fonts, but the option to
install new font does not appear. We put the font under
c:\winnt\fonts and it still cannot be used.

Try this:

Fonts folder has lost its system properties.
This will be obvious if viewing the fonts folder. You will not have
the names and the "Install new font" option under file.
If so:
Check the protection in Properties on folder c:\windows\fonts
If it is not shown with a check in System, then you cannot install
new fonts. It should also be protected, so you may not be able to
alter from Explorer.
In DOS mode, (or from Start-Run) use the command
   attrib +s c:\windows\fonts
Reboot and all should be OK

or...
Use TweakUI
Tweak UI 1.33 for Windows 2000, Windows NT, Windows Millennium
Edition, Windows 98 or Windows 95.
Details at: (may wrap)
http://www.microsoft.com/ntworkstation/downloads/PowerToys/Networking/NTTweakUI.asp
Download at:
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsme/guide/tweakui.exe

The system attribute is normally the problem and the DOS fix is the
solution in the majority of the last few hundred responses I have made
to similar problems. The Fonts folder will not function as a special
folder without the system attribute. The other common problem is that
the hidden desktop.ini is missing or corrupt and TweakUI will fix
that.
There is a third problem mentioned here but, in my experience, this
one is uncommon.
(Fontext.dll file may be missing or damaged)

I am having the same problem the original posting
individual was/is having... I went to check what you
suggested, but the systems box IS checked on my Fonts
folder properties. I tried the DOS prompt anyway, and
nothing has changed. I also downloaded Tweak UI, but when
I unzipped it it said I needed a disk to install it, and I
obviously don't have a disk... Any other suggestions would
be greatly appreciated.

Try installing TweakUI in a folder with 8 characters or less in the
name. Right-click on TweakUI.inf and select Install.
(Install doesn't like long folder names)

An alternative is to browse to the folder you unzipped it to when it
suggests a disk.

If TweakUI doesn't fix it, then try here or repost with your own
details. Sometimes "the same problem" can be a little different.

Alright, got TweakUI to install, ran Font Folder Repair,
and still nothing's changed.

The problem I'm having is that I recently tried to add
some fonts to my system.  I saved the .ttf files in
C:/Windows/Fonts just as I did the last time I added
fonts.  I checked to make sure they had saved there
correctly (and they had).  But they don't show up on the
font lists of any of my programs... including Word,
Frontpage, and PSP.  The systems box is checked on the
folder properties, and I tried the Tweak thing... I also
tried to use the Help book, but it's telling me to do
things I don't have (ie highlight file, go to File Menu,
click on Add Font.  I don't have an Add Font option
anywhere.)  Very frustrating, as this is the second
instance in as many days of problems I'm having that don't
respond to any of the fixes suggested...

Odd? You seem to have done the necessary to get back the "Install new
font" entry.
How many fonts installed? (including variations)
What operating system?

See if there is anything here that may help:

Two things to try:

Start Windows in "Safe" mode. Wait until everything has loaded. Quit and
restart in regular mode.

That causes some caches and system files to be rebuilt.

If no joy, try No 6 in this article, if you have not already:

Yay!  The first option under suggestion No 6 worked, and
that makes me very happy.  Thank you both for your help...
don't suppose either of you know why my image preview in
Explorer isn't working, or why my desktop starts up being
used as a webpage when the option isn't clicked?  Eh,
questions for different boards I suppose...

Thank you again.
