How do I import additional TrueType fonts into Word 97.

You don't. Word will display all the fonts installed in Windows that the
current printer is capable of printing. See
http://www.gmayor.com/where_are_my_fonts.htm
You can install fonts in Windows via various routes, the simplest being from
the fonts applet in Control Panel.

Windows handles addition and removal of fonts. Windows9x systems can
install up to about 1000 but 600 or so is a practical maximum. Windows
NT systems, including Windows 2000 and XP can install fonts without
limit. Applications that manipulate fonts can suffer slow-down of these
operations if the number of fonts grows large. Examples include word
processors and page layout programs. With recent computers, "large"
means thousands.

If you are happy with having all fonts available in all of your font
menus all of the time, it is easy to do. If you prefer other
arrangements, then it is a bit more complex and takes a bit of planning.

Assuming a simple requirement, there are two main methods:

For both, place the font files in some convenient directory. This can be
on the computer's hard drive or CD-Rom or network. directory.

Either
1. Navigate to that directory using any means such as Windows Explorer
or My Computer. Highlight the fonts you want. Choose   Copy   from the
right mouse click menu   or select Copy from the Edit menu. Now,
navigate to the default Font directory (usually c:\windows\fonts) and
Paste     the fonts. Windows will install them. Some applications
(typically those written for Windows 3.x) might have to be exited and
re-started to see the fonts in the menu.
Or
2. Navigate to  Control Panel   Fonts   File   Install new font.  A
dialog box will open.  Follow on-screen prompts. You will note there is
a check box for the 'option' to add and copying files to the font
folder. If you uncheck that box, a "shortcut" is placed in the font
folder pointing to the actual location of the file. If you remove the
font file from the source directory, the font will not be available to
the system. This is a problem especially if the source is removable,
e.g. a CD or network drive. I would recommend leaving the box checked
unless you have a particular reason not to. Another point to consider.
If you do have the file in the font directory and then remove it, the
file is deleted by the system. So, be sure to have a back up of all your
font files.

Let us know.

So far, all the postings in this thread were on installing fonts to the
hard drive. I wonder if somebody can please tell me about Copying the content
of the FONTS folder in Control Panel. I don't see the point in housing about
350 fonts when I use mostly Times New Roman.
I tried Select All on the folder's contents (about 97mb), clicked Copy,
went to my CD drive, clicked Paste - and nothing happened. Went to Windows
Explorer, dragged the FONTS folder to the CDdrive icon, and let go - and  got
admonished that Windows does not allow that. Tried the same procedure using
A:\ as destination for a limited number of fonts - and succeeded. But of
course it would take about 70 floppies to copy the folder's contents -
yonderlies madness. I have Windows XP; 40Gb HD; D:\CD-RW
Please...Help me
Thank you
Manuel
