If I create another account, there is no problem but I would need to
configure this new account from scratch with all the settings of the problem
account. I prefer not having to do this. If I set up a new account by
making a copy of the problem account, I obviously experience the same
problem.

Printer driver would seem to be implicated.
Word checks the printer driver for available fonts. The fact that that
user account is producing blank squares instead of glyphs indicates that
the rasteriser is not finding the required data at the requested code
points in these font files. This points to the printer driver settings.
Check the settings in this account, in particular the font substitution
settings. Change to do not substitute, if different.
Is a PostScript printer being used?

I have a HP Laserjet 5L PCL printer. I uninstalled and reinstalled it under
the problem user login. The test page prints correctly ... in Times New
Roman. But word keeps displaying blank squares in this and other fonts. In
Word I checked for font substitution but got the message that all fonts used
in the document (thus Times New Roman which displays in the toolbar!) are
available and that no substitutions are therefore needed.
I spent time comparing the entries in the registry that relate to Word and
fonts and couldn't find any difference between the users.
Should I post this question in another newsgroup?
Best regards
Alain

I see I was not as clear as I had hoped. The font substitution settings
you should check are in the printer driver.
Navigate to Start Printers and fax. Highlight the printer. Right click
and choose Properties from the context menu which opens. For a PCL
printer, there will be an entry for font substitution table. Change
settings to "Do not substitute" or similar. OK out.
Let us know.

Hellon tom,
I don't have an entry for font substitution in the printer properties. And I
don't think that could be the origin of the problem as only one of the 3
users has the problem and only in Word, not with the other software.
Best regards,
Alain

What is the make and model of the printer? What is the source of the
printer driver used by each machine {Windows distribution CD;
printer-maker CD that came with the printer; download from maker's site;
download from other site}?

Tom,
I have a HP LaserJet 5L printer and use the HP LaserJet 5L PCL driver. I
downloaded this driver from the HP site some years ago.

Since printer settings are made on a per-user basis, it might be worth a
few minutes to check the font substitution settings. For the HP PCL 5
driver, I believe you will find the font substitution table settings
under the "Device settings" tab.

Tom,
I can't find anything about font substitution table settings in the
properties of my printer. There is a Fonts tab but only to install a font
cartridge or download True-Type fonts in the printer.
Test pages print exactly the same for all three users of my PC and they
print in Times New Roman.
If the printer settings were different for the problem user, I would think
that the test page would not print correctly and the same problem would
exist in other software like Excel but that's not the case: Times New Roman
displays and prints without any problem in Excel. The problem of Times New
Roman displaying as square boxes is limited to the Microsoft Word software.
It looks like I will have to reinstall the user from scratch hoping that the
problem will not appear again.
Thanks for your help.
