Around three months ago, I upgraded an old Windows 98 machine to
Windows 2000. Great move, I like 2000 a lot more than 98.
But I just noticed that I have way fewer fonts in my c:\winnt\fonts
folder than I used to have. For example, none of the CAC family of
fonts are there; I probably used to have 20 of those. Lots of other
fonts I've used here or there are gone. I have 87 fonts total in that
directory.
What's the easiest, fastest, cheapest (free I hope) legal way to find
the fonts I had available in Windows 98 but that are missing now? I
looked on my Windows 98 CD and can't find any.

I don't understand why upgrading any application would *remove* fonts, but
judging from the nothing of posts we get here reporting this, it must
happen. There are myriad other sources of fonts besides Windows, however;
every app you install seems to add more fonts. I would guess you will need
to find and reinstall the app that supplied the missing fonts. There seem to
be some CAC fonts for download at
http://fonts.goldenweb.it/index_file/l/en/d2/True_Type_Fonts/c/c/start/850/defau
lt.html,
but I would still look for the application that supplied them.

The font link is useful. Thanks.
It would have been more accurate to say that I archived my data,
reformatted my drive, installed Windows, and now I'm noticing
"missing" fonts. I guess a less-drastic install would have preserved
the existing fonts?

"installed fonts" means a) all the font files in [Windows]\Fonts plus b) any
fonts listed in the corresponding registry section. Formatting your hard
drive zaps both of these. For future reference, when you archive you should
include the contents of the Fonts folder.

The MS-supplied fonts on your Win98CD will have been upgraded and
installed with your Win2K system. If you really want to look, they're
in one of the .cab files.
Most others, such as the "CAC" fonts, will have come with other
software. CAC in particular are from American Greetings, and are loaded
with some of their greeting card and scrapbooking programs. I just
looked at one of their scrapbooking application CD's and found 63
assorted fonts in the Setup/Windows/Fonts folder. (In this case, not the
CAC's, but 26 from Bitstream and the rest unattributed freeware).
Hundreds of applications include fonts - some install them
automatically, while others are polite and ask which you want to install.
