I am trying to distribute a public domain barcode font
(http://www.ericphelps.com/barcode/index.htm) by embedding it in a Word
document, but its not working.  According to the Word documentation,
the font should permanently install on the user machine if the document
containing the font has it embedded and a user views it.

I have the Word option set to embed TrueType fonts.
The font's embedding property is set to "Installable embedding
allowed"

Does anyone have any ideas?

Newer versions of MSWord no longer install installable fonts. (At least
Word 2003 doesn't).  This was probably a result of font vendors who
didn't know what they were doing getting upset over their fonts,
mis-created as "installable" getting undesired free distribution.
Another major drawback was the concept of a document writer Doing
Something I didn't know about to MY system (installing a font).

See this good description - look at the sections titled "embedding bits"
and "embedding fonts"
http://www.truetype.demon.co.uk/ttglosse.htm

AFAIK, there's no way to extract an embedded font from an MSOffice document.

There's probably some hokey way to get the font to your readers - such
as a hot-link to a website IN the document, where the website provides a
self-installing font with an .exe file or script ...
