I have a font in two places and would like to know if I can delete one of
them....
I'm using WinXP-pro, and noticed that most all (presumably Windows) fonts
are located in C:\WINDOWS\FONTS, except...
...there is one font (it actually has 3 files... academy.ttf, academy.pfb,
academy.pfm) that are located in C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\Fonts.
...and this set of 3 is *duplicated* in the c:\windows\fonts folder.
Can I delete the the one in system 32, is it actually used for anything? I
went ahead and did, and tried Word, and it didn't even notice, but if it's
going to cause a problem in Adobe or some other software, I will put it
back.
I do recall that I actually *did* install this font haphazardly 1.5 years
ago when I was "learning/experimenting" with WinXP and this PC when it was
new. Did WinXP put it in this system32 folder, or would I have had to put
it there manually?
Thanks for insights/suggestions.

1) You should NEVER have both the Type 1 (the .pfb and .pfm files) and
Truetype (the .ttf) versions of a font installed on the same system.
Decide which one you want to use and remove the other.
2) Windows would not have put them into the system32 folder. You can,
and probably should, PROBABLY delete them with no consequences.
3) Use the "Install new fonts" option in the Fonts folder to add fonts.
(File / Install New Fonts). Copying them in works, too, but has some
possible drawbacks.
4) It's possible (but very unlikely) that whatever you did resulted in
Windows' using the copy in System32. In that case you'll have to go
through an uninstall/reinstall.

To check how your fonts are installed, fire up Regedit and look at My
Computer\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows
NT\CurrentVersion\Fonts
This contains a) fonts installed by being placed in the Fonts folder, and b)
fonts installed by using Control Panel > Fonts > Intall new font with the
'Copy to fonts folder' checkbox NOT checked. If you look at the individual
registry entries, those that are a file name with no path are in the fonts
folder; those with a full path are located elsewhere.
Most Microsoft apps install their fonts by putting them into the Fonts
folder; but not all. Equation editor doesn't.
The safe way to remove fonts that you think might not be useful is to create
another folder (called, eg, Font Archive) and move the font files to that.
You won't do any damage removing a font -- at worst, you'll render the
display rather ugly, in which case, move the font back (Windows won't let
you remove any of the really critical ones.)
The biggest trap with deleting fonts is when, in a couple of years time, you
retrieve an old document that you'd long forgotten about, that turns out to
be formatted using it.
