Drivers was the first point of trouble shooting and resolution,
drivers are current.

Is this a "new" problem: did this printer ever work correctly with the
operating system?

Please let us know the OS and Office version you use and its current
status (Original, SP!, SP2). Does the problem happen with other
applications? Some and not others? Are the missing letters all one
colour (e.g. format all text red)? Or are all colours affected from
time-to-time?

This printer is PCL _and_ Postscript compatible. Try installing one of
the HP PCL5e drivers from the hp.com site.

The printer driver is the most likely suspect, peculiar printer fault
aside.

Let us know.

Drivers has now been identified as the culprit.
Many thanks for your prompt help.
