I know HOW to change the default font; it's just my current installation
won't cooperate. The default now is 'Times New Roman 12' & I want it to be
'Palatino Linotype 11'. I go to the toolbar, choose "Format\Font" then in
that window pick Palatino, hit the 'Default' tab at bottom and agree to
change to my current choice. It'll do it for that session, but next time I
run Word I'm back to Times New Roman 12. Help!!

Modify the Format of the Normal Style.

For some reason Word isn't saving your Normal.dot template after the change.
This could be because of an add-in (the Acrobat 7.0 add-in does this) or
some other problem.
After you click Default and before you exit Word, hold the Shift key while
you select File, and then select Save All. That should do the job. If not,
then use the File > Open dialog to open Normal.dot directly, modify its
Normal style, and save it. See
http://word.mvps.org/FAQs/Customization/CustomizeNormalTemplate.htm.

Plan 'A' didn't work ("After you click Default and before you exit Word, hold
the Shift key while you select File, and then select Save All. That should do
the job.") so I'd like to try the other option, only I can't find the
Normal.doc template. According to the instructions you've given at this link:
http://word.mvps.org/FAQs/Customization/CustomizeNormalTemplate.htm
it should have been in this folder:
C:\Documents and Settings\1\Application Data\Microsoft\Templates
It wasn't. Any ideas on where else I should look?
*I have chosen the option to show hidden files & folders
*My version is Word 2003 SP-1 running on Windows XP Pro SP-2

I can't be sure how your Windows installation is set up, but unless
your login name is "1", that digit in the path looks very unusual. I
suppose it's possible... Still, I would launch a search for Normal.dot
in Windows Explorer, starting at Documents and Settings, to see if
it's in a different branch.
The next thing is to check that you have access rights that allow you
to write files in that folder. Right-click the folder, click
Properties, and go to the Security tab. Click your login name in the
list and see what permissions are checked. If you're an administrator
it should be Full Control; otherwise, it needs to be at least List,
Read, and Write. Depending on how the system is set up, you may have
to log in as an admin to change the permissions.
