printer preferences problem

Sorry for the alliteration.
My problem is that when I try to set my printer preferences through the
control panel - printers or through the printers folder or any other way I am
constantly getting an error message telling me that there are not enough
resources to complete the operation. I have re-installed the printer drivers
several times and I can print but it's just a pain having to go into print
properties everytime to change the default.
Has anyone any ideas?

Thanks

Just some stabs in the dark --

(1) In setting preferences for one document, you should see a
"Properties" button. Click it to bring up the Printer Properties
dialog. Set things the way you want and click Default before OK.
Print your document. Exit the program, reopen it with a different
document, and verify that the settings stuck.

(2) Do you have other memory-hungry programs running? If so, stop
them before trying to make your change.

(3) Are you running as a limited user. If so, log in as administrator
and try changing printer properties. The "resources" message may be
masking a permission problem.

(4) Can you modify printer settings from Safe Mode? (I've never tried
this myself, but it seems like a reasonable possibility.)

Please let us know how it turns out -- others may be helped by your
experience.
