How do I go about turning text in ms word into a rainbow.  I have
looked everywhere for a free version and can't find one anywhere.

Plain, editable, text can't be multi-colored - fonts can only be a
single color (plus the background).

For relatively simple effects,
In Word 2003, Insert / Picture / WordArt; the way to access WordArt
may be slightly different in earlier versions. I forget exactly how in
each version, but Wordart has been available in Word for a long time.

For more elaborate effects you'll need a graphics program.

I think even with WordArt you'd be hard-pressed to get a rainbow gradient
effect using just the available patterns. What you can do, however, is you
have a rainbow background, is use it for a Picture "fill effect" in WordArt.

It's one of the options - although the "rainbow" blend is across all
of the text, not individual letters, unless you do one letter at a
time.  Really pretty slick!

In fact, looking at it a little closer now, there are really LOTS of
rainbow options - it's much better than I had thought!

Well, I posted without testing, since I use WordArt practically not at all
since it changed from something useful to something unusable.

I generally don't have a need for it, but I have been recommending it.
I'm curious - why do you consider it unusable? (Maybe I should stop
recommending it!)
Suzanne S. Barnhill - 04 Mar 2006 02:55 GMT
It's been unusable since whenever it was that they made it part of EscherArt
rather than a separate applet. It is well nigh impossible to make it
resemble ordinary text (which would be one of the chief uses for it since
you can't rotate ordinary text). There is no gallery selection that's
relatively unadorned that you can even start with. It's very difficult to
get rid of or change some of the effects on the fancier gallery selections.
I could go on.

Thanks for the enlightenment ..

The second gallery option straightens out pretty well.

Yes, I guess that's probably the best of a flamboyant lot. <g> Especially if
you change the font first. Thanks for pointing that out; somehow I'd been
overlooking it and trying to use the third one, though it's not too bad,
either. I just tend to use Publisher for anything that requires rotated
text.

I don't know of such a font but expect there is something available
commercially.

So far as I know, you can't do this within Word unless you convert your text
to some kind of graphic (i.e. Word Art). However, check out the font
animations that are available:
Format > Font > Animated Text

Las Vegas Lights or Sparkle Text may give you something close to what you
want. Use these sparingly.

A Google search for "rainbow font" turns up:
http://www.theill.com/hfc/

Says it works to color things in Word. Don't know.
