Hi,
I have several users in my office the experience a problem when they print a
Word document. I'm using Word 2002 in my environment. This problem doesn't
happen all the time. What is happening is that when my user opens a document
and clicks 'OK' in the print dialog box something happens to where the
document on the screen and the printed document change. The fonts in the
letter space themselves irratically and the font type changes itself from a
type of 'Times New Roman' to a 'Courier New'. This happens on several
different printers, all of them use different drivers.
Has anyone seen this type of behavior before? And, do you know how I can
correct this.
Thanks in advance,

This symptom almost always is a result of printer driver problems or
network connection problems.
On a couple of the problem boxes, try installing a local printer. It
does not matter which printer. Say a HP LaserJet. Select "file" as the
port. Select that as the default. Check the document layout in word.
If that is OK, check network connections and (a long shot given the
number of boxes involved) make sure the spooler is starting on all
computers. You might have to remove and re-install several printer
drivers.
Let us know.

This odd proportional font printing problem went away for a day or two and
now it's back. I removed and reinstalled the network printer to see if that
makes a difference, I'm not sure it will. My user tells me that as soon as
this happens the only thing they can do to make it stop is to quite winword
and then restart the application. I'm confused.

Word determines the document layout by first checking the printer
driver. That is why it helps diagnose such problems if a printer driver
is installed on the local machine and set to be the default. This helps
isolate the problem.

Tom,
Is there a master driver that would control the document layout? My user
can reproduce this on two separate printers. One of these is a networked HP
printer and the other is a networked Canon printer. I have about 3 boxes
that can identify with this problem. I'd hate to have to go through the
exspense of installing local printers on all three of these machines.

I see I was not clear.
You do not have to install the actual printer. Just pick a driver from
the Install Printer wizard's list, say HP LaserJet 1200, install the
driver and specify File as the port. Select this as the default printer.
Next, check the way the document is laid out in Word.
If that is OK, , remove and reinstall the printer drivers for the
network printers on just the affected boxes, in the usual way.

Tom,
Thanks for the suggestion. I'll give it a try in the morning and let you
know.

All,
I have a new laptop a Toshiba Satellite with Microsoft XP home edition and
have and was a new HPPCS 1400 all in one printer, copier, scanner on my old
Compaq. Everything (printer installed and worked GREAT)! I hooked the
printer up to the laptop and it says its there at start up (found new
hardware) then the microsoft wizzard pops up looks for it and says they can't
find it? I have spent all day trying to install it every way I know how but
nothing works?
In the pull down menu this printer isn't listed and says that I don't have
the proper driver? I have looked at all drivers at Microsoft, Toshiba and HP
but can't find anything that comes close? Ever when I try their knowledge
base or search all I get are lazerjets and a bunch of older printers and
drivers for them?
One would think that since both items are new (or almost new) they woul have
a driver to make it work??
Can anyone HELP PLEASE? Is there anywhere I can find the correct driver, or
am I doomed to buy another printer that may be more compatible? My daughter
just bought a new desktop that came bundled with the same printer as I have
and hers works without any problems?

Did the printer not come with a driver CD?

Yes there are drivers in the HP Printer set up disk, but Microsoft XP and
Toshiba don't accept any of them?
Could it be the connection-my printer hooks into the USB port or whatever
it's called and when wizard trys to install it there is a recommendation that
I plug it into the serial (or the other port) I always click on the port make
for my printer, or create a new port.
If this is the problem, would there be an item that I could get that I could
plug in printer USB connection to on one end, with the pin type connecttion
for what they suggust on the other?

USB devices are notorious for having problems, but I have an HP USB printer
that I never seem to have issues with (except that it thinks there's a
"problem" with the cartridge when it's printing fine). If Windows doesn't
like the HP-supplied driver, then it should provide one of its own. In any
case, *theoretically* Windows should auto-detect the printer and install it.
Regardless of what the problem is, however, it is not a problem with
Microsoft Word, so I suggest you post follow-up questions in a Windows XP
newsgroup or in an HP forum.
