When attempting to insert WMF clipart, or equation editor, I get the
following error.
Error ! Not a valid embedded object
I am experiencing the same issue as described throughout the thread by
claeschrister on 9/23/04 in the Word-drawing and graphics discussion group,
e Except, I am dealing with several hundred PCs, running either Windows XP or
Windows 2000, on a 2003 domain. Plus, none of my computers have Symantec
Antivirus. We do run McAfee.
One thing is certain, accounts that are local admins work just fine. Log in
as an individual who is not in the local administrators group, and the error
occurs.
Thanks for your help

You are not alone.

You are not alone. When I print I can see the pictures, but on the screen I
have a red x. If it is a Visio document, a double click will bring open Visio
embedded in the word document. If it is not a Visio document, then I get
properties. By the way, if I paste the picture from Vision, I get the Error !
Not a valid embedded object.
I've been hosed for week. Do you know of a program I can use to read word
documents with simple pictures until an answer is found?

I had the same problem here is the fix, I use win 200 pro
Log on to your admin account.
Go to My computer, C:, Winnt, Give Winnt folder Write permissions for your user that is having the problem.
I just applied Write to the temp folder in the winnt folder. To avoid problems. I hope this helped
To apply permissions
Right click on folder, click security tab. Choose user, Choose permission click apply.

I am getting the same thing with microsoft equation editor. I am using Word
2002 (or Word XP) with Microsoft Equation Editor 3.1 (French version). I have
an automatic numbering of equation with field codes etc. Whenever I try to
update the codes my equations give
"Erreur ! Des objets ne peuvent pas être créés à partir des codes de champs
de mise en forme."
which I think is the equivalent of
" Error ! Not a valid embedded object"
In addition I also get equation objects sometimes converting to bitmap
format.
As of yet I have no solution except to save lots...
Thanks for your help

I think I have found a bit of a response related to this problem. Which can
be found at the MathType website
http://www.dessci.com/en/support/tsn/TSN64.htm
Thankyou to Bob Mathews at MathType for his suggestions.

Terry - did you ever discover a solution for this? I am having the same "not
a valid embedded object" error and I also found that it worked for users in
the local machine admin group. The strange thing is that I have imaged
multiple workstations with the same ghost image and this is only happening on
one PC. Maddening, isn't it?!??

Anyone get a fix for this yet? We're running a school network (4 schools),
Windows 2003 Servers, Windows 2000 on 500 PC's and Office 2003 all around.
Anyone with Power User or higher status have no issues. However, we keep
students at a low level so they can't install software and such. They are
getting this "Not a valid embedded object" error and it's driving us nuts.
It's apparently a permissions thing and I would have no problem giving them
full access to a particular folder or file that would alleviate this
issue...if I knew what folder or file it was. Anyone?
Thanks

Ok guys and gals, I think i cracked it - well for me anyway - so I hope
this helps.
I realised that after a few recent changes to my OS the editor just didn't
work.
So during a mad search of my computer, I checked the Environment Variables
(Control Panel - System - Advance Tab) and I realised that my variables for
my temp folder were wrong. By changing it back to the correct location i.e.
c:\windows\temp i manged to get the editor working again!!
Hope this helps you all, i know how annoyed I was!!

Thanks for the reply but unfortunately for me, this wasn't my problem (all
environment variables were set correctly). I did however stumble onto
something that worked for one user (I have yet to test it on the other user).
We use roaming profiles in our office so I decided to try deleting his
profile from the network (after saving it elsewhere, just in case) then
deleted his user profile from the PC (to rule out the PC as the problem),
rebooted, then logged back onto the machine as him. A new profile was created
and voila, everything worked - no more embedded object errors or those
annoying red x'es. I will post my results after I try it on the other user
that is experiencing the same problem.

>[Equation Editor Problems]
I think I've finally cracked this one. It's been affecting an apparently
random selection of our machines for months.
When I deployed IE using IEAK, I set naively set the Disable Roaming Cache
option, thinking that this adjusted ExcludeProfileDirs. What this option
actually does is to set the cache directory for a new users to C:\Windows\
Temporary Internet Files. When this directory does not exist, everything
stilll works because Windows uses a sensible default instead.
If you create a new Administrator or Power User after installing IE, the C:\
Windows\Temporary Internet Files directory is created when they login. At
this point, embedded objects break ("Error! Not a valid embedded object"),
and so does downloading files with IE ("The requested site is either
unavailable or cannot be found.") for normal users.
I've put a writeup of the problem including all the gory details at
http://www.chiark.greenend.org.uk/~peterb/windows/notavalidembeddedobject/
Even if this isn't isn't the same issue, the symptoms are so similar that
this may give you a pointer in the right direction.
