Hi all,

Im looking at a way so that the users on our network all have the same
templates ready to use.
Is their a registry fix to set the path?
Currentley these are kept on a share.
Under (Word 2003 SP2) Tools > Options > File Locations Tab, I would
like to set the Workgroup templates to this share when users login.
I would rather not have to make the login script download these to a
location on the PC, rather change the path to where they are stored on
our share.d

Thanks in advance,

Paul.

See the article "Distributing macros to other users" at:

If that doesn't give you what you need, then I would suggest that you ask in
the microsoft.public.windows.group_policy newsgroup.

Hope this helps.

Curious, I am actually trying to figure out how to get the files
copied down to the PC during logon.  I'm interested in finding out how
to force the redirect as well.

As we get more laptop users in the company, they will need to have the
company templates with them even when not connected to the servers.
How had you confugured the login script to copy files?

Does anyone have any suggestions on ways to ensure the standard files
are kept current on the workstations? That is, if the user changes the
template, the next time they login, the standard is pushed back down
to the workstation. Or if a template is retired, it gets removed from
the workstations as well.

Just a warning about server based templates. Don't use a UNC (ie
\\server\share ) in the file locations.  Use a drive mapping.  We just
replaced our server and after that documents took an annoying long
time to open.  The creating template had been recorded in the document
and Word was trying to reference it. Word was searching the network,
including VPN links, for \\OldServerNowDisconnected.

We have used UNC paths without any problems, we have offices in
different locations and these use the logon server to bring down the
normal.dot file. I beleive you can do the same with the templates by
checking the default path for the templates folder in word and copying
down the templates from the server to the path on the workstation.

So we just use the command:

copy "%logonserver%\NETLOGON\Templates\normal.dot"
"%userprofile%\Application Data\Microsoft\Templates\normal.dot"
to copy down the normal.dot every time a user logs in to make sure they
are using the correct settings. Instead of downloading all the
templates everytime though you could set a if statement to check for
any changes or new templates.

One question on the normal.dot file though is if you set the path to
where the templates are all stored will this setting be used when users
open new word documents? I have had a couple of people that I have had
to set it for so Im thinking that it might not. Then again they could
of over written their normal.dot file quiet easily without these
settings. Any ideas?

I haven't touched the users' Normal.dot.  All I change is the location
of Clipart and Workgroup Templates. And if that can be done through AD
or scripting, I'd liketo know so I wouldn't haveto manually change it
everytime a new user logs into a PC.

We had no trouble with UNC either. Until that server was no longer
available and old documents were looking for it because the creating
template was from there. Admin staff did not like waiting 5-10 minutes
for a document to open.
