With Administrator's rights, installed the MS Office97
Suite on some brand new Dell Optiplex GX270 desktops.
Everything works ok, however... When logging on as the
end user of the machine, the following errors are
displayed:
"Findfast.exe - Application Error. The application failed
to initialize properly..."
"OSA.exe - Application Error. The application failed to
initialize properly..."
When launching Word97, the following error is displayed:
"Winword.exe - Application Error. The application failed
to initialize properly..."
This also occurs when attempting to launch Excel 97 and
PowerPoint. For Access, the error reads, "...Can't find
the DLL Mso97" Photo Editor runs just fine.
The OS is Windows2000 Professional. I downloaded and
installed all of the fixes, security patches and service
packs from Microsoft before proceeding with the
installation of any apps, including the MS Office97
Suite. After Office was installed, SR2 was also
installed. The end users were made members of the Power
Users group, which doesn't seem to matter, have same
problem after I remove them from that group.
Has anybody else ever experienced this problem?

My only suggestion is to give adminstrative rights to the
end user and then install the entire suite while logged in
as the end user. When installation is complete, take out
the adminstrative privileges.
I am assuming the OS is W2K or later.
all the best

A colleague of mine solved this for me. It was a
permissions issue. For those interested, the steps
follow. This is for Windows2000:
-Log in as Administrator
-From the Desktop, Double-click on My Computer
-Right-click on C:
-Click on Properties
-Click on the Security tab
-Click on Advanced
-Check the box that says, "Reset permissions on all child
objects & enable propagation of inheritable permissions."
-Click on OK
-Click on Yes... this begins the resetting of permissions,
but will trip on C:\pagefile.sys as it is use. When you
get to this point, just click on Continue and it will
complete the operation.
Then you're done. Log out. When the end user logs in,
the Office97 apps launch and perform as expected.
Thanks to Kathy.
