Centering decimal tabs in table columns

I use the decimal tab in table columns to align numeric information about the decimal point. However a decimal tab has to be placed manually with the mouse on the ruler. Is there a way to centre a decimal tab in a column. (i.e. not just clicking where I think is closest to the centre.)

Usually you don't really want to center the tab stop itself but the text
that will be aligned with the tab stop. I usually do this by centering the
column text, inserting a decimal tab stop where the decimal point falls in
most of the centered text, then changing the text alignment to Left.
