Ooops... Table woes partt 2!

Ooops. I was about to add that the first annoyance does not happen all the
time. Just some documents on occasions.

2. Very often there is a mismatch in the table column alignment between the
ruler and the table itself. Let's say I want to widen a column, so I grab
its left handle on the ruler and slide it to the right. It works, except
that very often the whole table is offset to the left on the ruler... very
strange...
I Googled it up and did not find anything on this... am I the only one who
has ever seen this, or is it normal but I am missing something obvious?

TIA

Bon Jour Jean-Guy,

I have not experienced the "border problem" with Word Xp,
but there are often times when borders do not behave as expected.

Any border that you format belongs to BOTH the cells that share it.
If you delete a column (in my experience), the top and bottom borders
of the deleted cells disappear but the left/right borders remain attached
to the neighbour cells.

Now those neighbour cells THEMSELVES become neighbours,
and if their borders were different, there is a format conflict on
their (new) common border. There seems to be a hierarchy of borders
that determines which 'format' wins.

When you look at the Ruler for a table, do not forget the cell (text)
margins.
It is to the text content that the Ruler applies. When you compare the
alignment
of the table with the text above and below it, the alignment is such that
the TEXT
margins WITHIN the table match the MARGINS of the text above and below -
giving a 'cleaner' appearance to the page.

J'esp?re que cela vous aide!

Thanks, I understand that.
It is just that for the first time I experienced a strange behaviour that
when I deleted the last column, the resulting table had ALL of its border
reset to the most common border width, even the first 2 columns that had no
borders what so ever. Very strange.

Yes, I understand that. But there should not be a one inch offset between
the row selected and its borders as displayed on the ruler.

I am not sure what you are trying to explain in that last sentence...

Thanks again for taking the time to think about my little complaints!

This is the text in the document above the table........

This is the text below the table........

The Table border is offset to the left so that the 3 "This is ..." all
line up.

But of course NOT by 1" .........Hmmmm:-[

Ha! Yes I am aware of that, This is cell padding. I have no problem with
that.

What I am trying to explain is that normally, if you drag a column border
from the ruler, you can draw an imaginary vertical line from the place you
drag on the ruler (the handle) down to the column border on the page. The
column border on the page will line up exactly with the handle on the ruler.

What I frequently experience is that the handle on the ruler is offset to
the left (usually) between ? and ? of an inch. So, the imaginary vertical
line from the ruler will be to the left of the cell border (or column
border) being moved. Even worst, the graphic representation of the handle on
the ruler are offset, but in fact they are not! In this case I have to guess
were the handle is and click were it should be on the ruler, not were I see
it  (I see it offset to the left, but only the image is offset, Word still
"sees" it where it should be, but somehow displays something different!).
This can be most annoying when you want to add a tab in a cell, you click on
the ruler to add the tab and either nothing happens because even though it
looks that I clicked between the cell handles, I actually clicked exactly on
the "invisible/ghost" handle, or if the offset is wider than the cell, I
could even add the tab in the cell to the right of the one I was aiming for
on the page...

Does that make any sense?

Very annoying and strange... And I swear I am sober and do that I am not
making this up!
I guess it only happens to me because I have not seen any post regarding
this problem.

Cheers.

If this is happening just in a specific document, I would suspect corruption
in the document. It is happening in all documents, I'd investigate display
issues or problems with the Registry Data key.

It's in between. Some documents some of the time... Some documents that
exhibit the behaviour do not do so consistently... It come and goes.
Maybe it is linked to something happening to the document itself as I have
seen it on other computers, but from documents created on a template that
was saved at least once on my machine.

There must be some logic behind the whole thing but I have not been able to
identify it yet.

Some time ago I asked a similar question here and this is what Suzanne
Barnhill responded. I am sure she will not be offended if I quote it here:
If auto resizing is still enabled (Table | Properties | Table | Options),
you'll see some strange behavior.
Note that the effect of Shift and Control is reversed between cell
boundaries and ruler markers. For more on this, see
http://www.mvps.org/word/FAQs/TblsFldsFms/TableBasics.htm. Also, if you want
to set specific widths for columns, you're much better off using the old
Cell Height and Width Dialog (see
http://www.mvps.org/word/FAQs/TblsFldsFms/TablePropProbs.htm).

Thanks. I had found that thread when I Googled. BTW, AutoResize is off.
These suggestions are fine but they do not apply in my case. I have no
problems changing column width. It is just that the cell border handles on
the Ruler (which displays all the cell borders when you click inside a
table) are offset like so:

On Ruler:
|-------|-------|-------|
on the page below the ruler:
       |-------|-------|-------|

See? If I select the first cell, its border is at zero inch from the margin,
but the ruler is offset to the left of the margin.

Strange, no? Or am I missing the obvious?

I see what you mean, I am not able to reproduce the problem here in Word
2003 no matter what I try.
Very strange indeed.
