Cross-reference to tables

I have tried to add cross-references to tables within my
document with mixed results. I can add cross-references
to two of them and only two when I have 58 tables all
formatted with styles--the same one. I read in the Help
that if a cross-reference doesn't appear you are not
using a default style. I am. I have changed the styles
around from table "caption" to "table, tt", for example,
saved, and closed to see if that would make my other
tables appear in the dialog box with no luck. I am using
Word 2000. (All my other documents appear in the dialog
box without fail--figures, sections, headings, etc.)

Does anyone have an idea of what I am missing?

Thanks.

For cross-references to captioned items like figures or tables, Word doesn't
use styles, it uses auto-numbering fields.  To have access to all your
tables in the cross-reference dialog, first use the Insert>Caption command
to insert for each table a caption that includes the auto-numbering field.
