Inserting symbols into a table in Word 2002

When a table is created and the Insert, Symbol option is
taken Word 2002 (Office XP) crashes with the
message "MIcrosoft Word has encountered a problem.....).
Any help...

Can you insert the symbol into an empty paragraph outside the table, and
then copy and paste the symbol into the table?  Does the problem go away
if you select a different default printer in Windows?
