Hi:

Is there a way to create a TOC format that can be applied to documents that
are already in use, as well as new documents.  The authors of the reports
that I do desktop publishing for often open old report and replace text.
None of these reports have formatted headers to create TOCs.  I would like to
create a standard formatting that I can apply to either new or old Word docs.

Any help would be wonderful.

You're talking about several different things here:

1. Heading styles. If you're building a TOC based on headings, you'll need
to apply these styles (either the built-in ones, modifed or not, or custom
ones) to the relevant paragraphs. There's no way around that for this type
of TOC.

2. TOC styles. You can customize the appearance of the TOC entries as well,
and those styles would need to be copied to the new document/template.

3. TOC setup. You can actually save a TOC field as an AutoText entry to
facilitate inserting a TOC with specific levels, page numbers suppressed at
various levels, etc. The actual appearance of the TOC will still depend on
the TOC styles.
