Word table- each column enters cell by cell

I just loaded Word 2003. I have a data base table with 500 rows and 10
columns. When I tab across the table, the columns off the desktop now appear
on the desktop 1 column at a time and each cell, starting at the top appears
cell by cell. Is there a setting to correct this?
