I've been using Word for Mac for many years but only recently needed
to make my first form. I'm currently using Word 2001 for Mac. Is it
possible to place either a drop-down form field or a text form field
within a drop down form field? In other words, I'd like one or
(possibly) more of the options in a drop down form field to be another
drop down form field or, even better, a text form field (in order to
be able to use "auto-fill"). Any help you could offer would be
appreciated. Thanks.

Neither of the options you are seeking is available. The closest is a
combobox from the controls toolbox. I do not recommend using this. If you
need a combobox, go to constructing a UserForm. (See the UserForm FAQ on the
MVP FAQ site for more on these.)

See also the MVP FAQ: <URL: http://www.mvps.org/word/> which is awesome!
