I have a lengthy table with several rows of merged cells.  I am having great
difficulty inserting columns in the table where I want them...and I loose all
column alignment when I do get 1 column to insert in the beginning of the
table.  I am unable to then move the column to the correct location.  Any
assistance would be greatly appreciated.

If you hold the Alt key, you should be able to carefully drag each of the
relevant column borders into the correct position.
