I want to find out the reason/purpose of a symbol in tables. If you insert
a table, say three rows, and engage "Show All" you will notice a symbol
which looks like a small circle with a cross through it. This symbol is on
everyline at the beginning and at the end of the rows. Can someone
pleeeeeese provide some answers for me. Thanks.

That's the "end of cell" and "end of row" character. The cell or row
formatting is stored with that character, in the same way that
paragraph formatting is stored with the paragraph mark.
