Hi
On the Tools menu, click Templates and Add-Ins.
Click the Templates tab.
Click on Add..browse to the folder containing the template and select the
template and click ok
This now becomes a global template which loads whenever word starts

Thanks Ashish,
but what if I want to do this myself (e.g. as a part of an installation
program) and not leave it to the user; where should a global template go on
disk?
TIA

You could use the Custom office installation wizard
http://www.microsoft.com/resources/documentation/office/2000/all/reskit/en-u
s/45t2_1.mspx

... or install it here: C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office\Startup
Thanks
