Is there a method that can be accessed from outside word (using OLE) which
returns the version of Word which is running?

The circumstances you're positing aren't clear. You're automating Word? Then
you can use app.Version and app.Build.

If Word isn't running, you can't query it directly. But you should be able to
get the information from the Registry, CLSID section. Do some snooping around
in there, searching winword.exe, .doc and looking up the GUIDs. You should be
able to pick up current version information.
