I have a variety of buttons that reference user-created macros that I've
added to various places on Word Toolbars. I saved the toobar customization to
the document so that the new buttons could be viewed from any machine. Until
recently adding, moving, or modifying these buttons worked fine with no
problems. I have one document in particular that when I now open it, the
customized button does not appear on my machine. I've tried deleting and
re-inserting the buttons several times, and even deleted and re-created the
macro the button calls, but the button still does not display on my machine
when I open the document. Additionally, I thought perhaps a corrupt
normal.dot file may be at fault, so I renamed it, to allow word to create a
new normal.dot. This did not help either.
What's more bizzare is that when I open these documents from another machine
across the network, the button appears. I am using Windows and Word 2000 sp3.
Any suggestions appreciated...

Can't really tell without being on-site. I suspect that the customization is
stored somewhere that is not accessible on the new machine but is on the
others.
See http://addbalance.com/word/movetotemplate.htm for step-by-step
instructions on moving / sharing / copying / backing-up customizations
including AutoText, AutoCorrect, keyboard assignments, toolbars, macros,
etc.
