I have a Mac G4 and within the Word application, shorcuts are assigned to
various keys of the keyboard. For example alt-a types the special character
æ

I want to assign another macro in Word to this keyboard combination.

I successfully assigned macros to some key combinations, such as
ctrl-alt-shift A, but when I want to assign a macro to some key
combinations, the software does not let me.

Is it possible, and if yes, how should I proceed?

Thanks for any help on the subject.

I don't know anything about the Mac so this may not help. In Windows, AFAIK,
any key combination can be assigned to a macro although there are some that
probably shouldn't be and some that can't be done via the GUI but can be
done in VBA. Have you tried (and failed) in VBA? If so, I suspect it can't
be done on the Mac for some reason I know nothing of.
